Concept of the work

Ninth Letter is a literary arts journal published by the University of Illinois and produced in partnership by Creative Writing and Graphic Design. It is published twice a year to coincide with the semesters at the University. Approximately 6,000 submissions are received for each issue, which are culled down to approximately 25 works of fiction, nonfiction and poetry. Much of the editorial work is done by graduate students in Creative Writing. The design of the journal is handled by Graphic Design, Photography, and sometimes Painting undergraduates under the direction of an assigned faculty member. The design work is conducted as a 3-credit class. It is customary for the design team to propose and collect one or more art features for each issue.
